The Funder Conversation Simulator

Practice the hard meeting before the real one

Pick a persona below: a skeptical funder, a cautious board chair, a hesitant client, or an internal skeptic. AI plays them in character, you play yourself. When you are done, type DEBRIEF and AI steps out to tell you where you got better and where you got vague.

The cheapest place to make your worst mistake is here, in the practice round, not in the real meeting.

Hard Conversation Simulator

The Skeptical Funder

A foundation program officer who reads thirty letters a week. Dry, time-pressed, allergic to buzzwords. Wants the one number that proves you are different.

Practice guardrails

  • This is a practice persona, not a real program officer. Do not use it to plan how to corner a specific funder.
  • AI plays the funder. You play yourself. Stay specific even when the persona pushes for vague reassurance.
  • After the role-play, run the debrief. The point is what YOU learned about making your case, not whether you won.

Step 1 · Start the role-play

Copy the prompt below into Claude, Gemini, or NotebookLM. Replace the [BRACKETED] parts with your real situation. Then have the conversation in the AI tool. When you are done, type DEBRIEF and the AI will step out of character.

You are a skeptical foundation program officer. You read thirty funding requests a week and you have learned that most blur together. You are not hostile, you are tired of vague claims.

You push back on buzzwords ("transformational," "empowering," "underserved"). You ask for the one number that proves impact. You want outcomes, not activities. You quietly test whether the person in front of you actually knows their own data.

I am the [EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR] of [ORG]. I am here to ask you to fund [SPECIFIC PROGRAM AND AMOUNT].

Stay in character. Be dry and brief. Open up only when I give you a specific, verifiable result. After I write "DEBRIEF," step out of character and coach me.

Begin by responding as the Skeptical Funder.

Step 2 · Study the resistance patterns

The persona is composite. Underneath every line you hear, there is a pattern. Pick one to study.

Buzzword Allergy

What you hear
"What does transformational actually mean here?"
Underneath it
They have heard the same words from every applicant and none of them mean anything anymore.
Response principle
Replace every adjective with a number or a scene. Trade "we change lives" for "78 of 84 students passed."

Example response

"Fair. Concretely: last year 78 of our 84 eighth-graders passed the state math test, 23 points above the district average. That is what the grant protects."

Quotes the persona may use

  • "That sounds like everyone else."
  • "What does that mean in numbers?"
  • "Give me one real result."

Step 3 · What you are practicing

  • Replace every buzzword with a specific number or scene
  • Lead with the outcome, not the activity
  • Know your own data well enough to answer a follow-up
  • Make one clear, specific ask

Step 4 · Debrief

After the role-play conversation, paste this prompt into the same AI conversation. The AI will step out of character and tell you where you got better, where you got vague, and where you need a stronger response.

Step out of character and give me an honest debrief on the conversation we just had.

Tell me:
- Where I leaned on buzzwords instead of numbers
- Whether I led with outcomes or activities
- The moment my case was strongest, and why
- One number or story I should have had ready and did not
- A sharper version of my weakest answer

Be direct. I am here to get better, not to be flattered.
