Reframing AI for the Trades

You already run apprentices. This is one more.

What you'll be able to do

  • Replace "AI is for tech people" with "AI is the apprentice that does my paperwork"
  • Name where the jobsite week bleeds out
  • Adopt the foreman frame

You already run apprentices

You already know how to do this. You hand a fast, green apprentice a task, you check the work, and you own the outcome. AI is the same move. It is quick and it never forgets the codebook, but it has no field reality and no judgment. You stay the foreman.

Where your week bleeds out

The time disappears into the same drafting jobs, redone from a blank page after hours: RFIs, submittals, change-order write-ups, daily logs, punch lists, scope letters, bid clarifications, and the pile of sub and client emails. Every one of those is paperwork AI can carry once you feed it your context.

The foreman frame

AI brings speed and the codebook. You bring judgment, field reality, and the signature. Treat it like a search engine and you get search-engine junk. Treat it like a green apprentice who needs your context, your facts, and your standards, and you get a usable draft you finish and own.

Output quality is what you feed it

"Write a change order" gets you junk. The plan reference, the reason, the cost basis, and your Context Document get you a draft worth fixing. The skill is not magic phrasing. It is feeding the apprentice enough context to be useful.

What stays human

  • Money. AI never makes a number. Pricing is yours, verified.
  • Contracts and binding language. AI drafts the narrative; you own the terms and the signature.
  • Safety sign-offs. A competent person owns every safety call. AI does not.
  • Anything that could hurt someone or expose you. If you would sign your name to it, you verify it first.
